INNER TEMPLE INTER-VARSITY MOOT COMPETITION

The Inner Temple Inter-Varsity Mooting Competition, normally held in January, is a popular competition hosted by the Inner Temple Mooting Society. Participants compete in front of practicing barristers, academic staff and members of the judiciary. The prize for winning is normally a mini pupillage with the sponsoring chambers.

In 2021, the University of Manchester submitted a team of two to participate in the competition: Tom Barclay and Sandika Memphis de Zoysa. They were tasked with two moot problems, one was a family case about a litigant in person and the was a criminal evidence problem about compelling someone to testify. The team performed well, only losing in the semi-finals, though this came after defeating the eventual winners, the University of Oxford, in the quarter finals.

“It was a great experience, definitely challenging but so rewarding. I enjoyed the competition so much, and was delighted to compete in front of very important members of the Judiciary. I would definitely do this competition again and try to get further than previously.” - Tom Barclay
